SpecSys6: Designer

JOB TITLE: Designer

COMPANY/DEPARTMENT: SpecSys, Inc. / Engineering

REPORTS TO: Engineering manager located at Montevideo or New Ulm

FLSA STATUS: Exempt / Full-time

JOB SUMMARY: The designer will provide solutions to customer problems by translating the desired product inputs into benefits that satisfy the design output requirements. The design engineer will work closely with the client to ensure that the products are designed on time, on budget, and meet or exceed the customers’ expectations.


  • Key responsibility and skill requirement will be to listen
  • Overall project responsibility including:
    • Responsible for completing projects on time and on budget
    • Understand expectations and standards of customer
    • Verify the design meets performance and configuration specifications
  • Will be responsible to work on multiple CAD packages
  • Create detailed CAD models of manufactured components
  • Create detailed CAD models of purchase parts
  • Reviews CAD models for completeness, interferences, and manufacturability
  • Develop detail drawings of purchased components and assemblies
  • Develop detailed manufacturing drawings of piece parts, weldments, assemblies, and schematics
  • Review detail drawings for completeness, accuracy, and client standards
  • Generate Bill of Materials
  • Review and update model and drawing tolerances
  • Responsible for project CAD layout
  • Develop design concepts to perform project function reviews
  • Review Bill of Materials for completeness
  • Specify purchase components to be used
  • Source purchase components to be used
  • Prepare CAD model for FEA analysis
  • Prepare project review booklets
  • Initiate and occasionally moderate project review meetings
  • Develop and update project timelines
  • Review project scope and insure project is still inline with contract and expectations
  • Update and track action / issue items
  • Prepare Engineering Change Order proposals for submission to the customers
  • Many tasks include their own work and/or the review of work of others in the department


  • Ability to communicate with Manufacturing Operations, Sales, Clients and Quality is vital.


  • High School Diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Courses in trigonometry, mathematics, physics, machine shop and drafting
  • Computer aided Drafting and Design AAS Degree


  • Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be acceptable.
